Didier Deschamps will, however, be aware that they have struggled to generate results on home soil in Europe.

It was their form on the road that saw them through the group stage, with two defeats suffered in three outings at Stade Velodrome.

Marseille had kept four clean sheets in a row in front of their own supporters before slipping to consecutive 1-0 defeats.

Inter Milan will be looking to make it three successive setbacks, with it imperative that they take something from the game.

Claudio Ranieri’s side find themselves in the middle of an alarming wobble, with qualification for next season’s Champions League hanging in the balance.

Inter have suffered four defeats in five to slip into seventh place in Serie A, six points adrift of the top four.

They will be looking for a European boost in midweek, with their season in serious danger of imploding.

Six defeats in their last 11 Champions League outings does not bode well, but Inter have fared better on their travels of late than they have at home and will be hoping for more away day joy in the South of France.

Team news

Loic Remy will be the most notable absentee from the Marseille starting XI as he is still nursing a hamstring injury.

Alou Diarra misses out after picking up a knock in a 1-1 draw with Valenciennes on Saturday, with a toe problem set to keep him sidelined.

Stephane Mbia (thigh) and Andre-Pierre Gignac (adductor) will also be unavailable to Deschamps.

Inter have few injury concerns to contend with heading into the game, but Ranieri must decide whether to mix things up following their recent run of results.

Walter Samuel could be drafted back into the fold after sitting out the club’s last two matches with a thigh strain.

Dejan Stankovic and Diego Milito are also available again after missing Inter’s 3-0 reversal against Bologna on Friday.

Swiss club FC Basel will host Germany’s Bayern Munich on Feb. 22 when the first leg of their group-of-16 Champions League tie kicks off at St. Jakob Park in Basel. Bayern Munich sits in third place in the German Bundesliga with 45 points from 14 wins, three draws and five losses and are four points behind league-leading Borussia Dortmund. Basel are in first place in the Swiss Super League with 39 points from 11 wins, six draws and two defeats. They have a five-point lead on second-place Luzern.

Basel has been the surprise team of the tournament and they’ll be looking to keep up the momentum. It won’t be easy against Bayern Munich though as the team is filled with excellent international players such as Thomas Müller, Mario Gomez, Toni Kroos, and Philipp Lahm.

Most of Basel’s players are healthy for this match other than Scott Chipperfield and Philipp Degen who are both out of action due to thigh injuries. It looks like Markus Steinhofer will continue to play at right-back for the Swiss side. Midfielders Giles Yapi and Valentin Stocker should both be back in the squad after returning from injuries. Alexander Frei, Benjamin Huggel, Marco Streller, and Granit Xhaka will all have to play pretty clean games since they’re just one yellow card away from automatic suspensions.

Bayern manager Jupp Heyncke was disappointed with his team’s 0-0 draw in Freiburg on the weekend, but he’s expected to make just a couple of changes to the starting 11. Thomas Muller should play instead of Arjen Robben and David Alaba will likely fill in for centre half Bastian Schweinsteiger. Daniel van Buyten will likely miss the game due to an injury and Jerome Boateng will likely play centre back. Diego Contento and Breno will also likely miss the game with injuries.

Basel has only made it this far in the Champions League once before, which was in the 2002/03 season. One of their top players, Winger Xherdan Shaqiri, will move to Bayern Munich in the summer as a deal’s already been worked out with the German club for a fee that was reported to be €10 million. Basel entertained fans in the group stages, but allowed 10 goals in their six matches.

Bayern Munich beat Basel 2-1 in Switzerland back in September of 2010 in the Champions League and followed it up with a 3-0 win at home. Schweinsteiger scored both of the goals. However, Mario Gomez is leading the team during this year’s Champions league season with six goals, just one behind Lionel Messi of Barcelona. Alexander Frei has five for Basel so far.

Basel has won four and drawn once in their last five games with Munich winning three and drawing two in their past five. Basel should put up a good fight here, but they’ll likely come up just short and lose this home leg.

Andre Villas-Boas tonight admitted his insistence he was at Chelsea for the long haul would carry more weight if publicly backed by the club’s hierarchy.

Blues boss Villas-Boas was once again bombarded by questions about his future this evening ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League last-16 clash at Napoli.

The 34-year-old reiterated he was confident Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich would not sack him should he fail to reach the quarter-finals and that his three-year project to revamp the squad had the Russian billionaire’s “full” backing.

Villas-Boas claimed on Thursday that he did not want a vote of confidence from Abramovich, joking that would mean “the end”.

But he suggested tonight he was beginning to sound like a broken record in his claims of unequivocal backing and it might be better if someone at the top explained they were finally going to allow a manager to see things through.

In front of watching chairman Bruce Buck and chief executive Ron Gourlay, Villas-Boas said: “You have to understand that this club, from 2004 up to now, has made a dramatic change for the best in terms of their past.

“It’s the richest part of Chelsea’s history, full of trophies and success, and you want to perpetuate that into the future.

“To do that, you have to sometimes make changes because you cannot sustain the same habits that you had in 2004, when this environment and team was created to make a winning team.

“These words would be more valuable coming from the top. I cannot keep saying them but, as the voice of the club, I will continue to perpetuate this message because this is what we believe in.”

Villas-Boas, who has overseen what is currently the club’s worst season of the Abramovich era, admitted speculation over his future was inevitable based on the Russian’s previous habit of firing managers.

He said: “In terms of the results this year, the speculation is normal given the cultural past of this football club, but you have to understand that there’s a different perspective now.”

The Portuguese added: “I’m really confident about next year.

“That doesn’t take any responsibility for what’s happening now, but we had a three-year project to change not only the team, but the culture and structure of the club.

“There’s a lot we needed to do, a lot of plans, so that’s why I’m excited about the future. Having said that, we have to build a team to win trophies from the start.

“With that in mind, the fact that we’re no longer in the Carling Cup and don’t have a chance to win the (Barclays Premier League) title is a shame.

“But we are still confident we can do well in the Champions League and the FA Cup.”

Standing in their way in Europe are Napoli and the Italian side’s boss Walter Mazzarri has ordered his side to think like underdogs, claiming only a “perfect” performance would beat Villas-Boas’ men.

“Tomorrow, we will face a team, Chelsea, who have played more than 100 Champions League matches,” he said.

“We are proud to play this match but I don’t want to hear anyone saying we are the favourite for this game.

“We can find a result only if we play a great match.

“All the team has to play not only a special game, but the perfect game.”

Mazzarri was banned from the tie for pushing Villarreal forward Nilmar during Napoli’s final group game in December.

Assistant Nicolo Frustalupi will deputise, with the Italians having won all their previous games when he has done so.

Mazzarri said: “Nicolo Frustalupi is probably better than me as tactical coach and I’m sure that he will be a perfect coach tomorrow.”

Napoli boast one of the most feared attacking trios in Europe in Edinson Cavani, Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

The latter is the only one of them yet to score in the Champions League – something he was planning to change tomorrow.

“I really hope so – it would be pretty nice to score my first Champions League goal against a team like Chelsea,” he said.
